Request an Assessment

PRE-PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AT MBS

The Pre-Professional Program at Minnesota Ballet School is designed for dedicated young dancers seeking advanced classical ballet training, individualized guidance, and a clear pathway toward higher-level study and professional opportunities.

Rooted in the Vaganova Method and led by graduates of the Vaganova Ballet Academy, the program combines structured classical training with pointe, conditioning, contemporary dance, historical dance, repertoire, performance experience, and individualized mentorship.

Each dancer follows an age- and level-appropriate training path while developing the technique, artistry, musicality, strength, discipline, and versatility required for advanced ballet training.

We don't train dancers for one competition. We prepare them for what comes after it.

TWO PRE-PROFESSIONAL TRAINING LEVELS

Junior Pre-Professional | Ages 10–13

Junior Pre-Professional | Ages 10–13

Senior Pre-Professional | Ages 14–18

Training may include Classical Ballet, Pointe, conditioning, Contemporary Ballet, variations and repertoire, performance preparation, and individualized artistic guidance.

Placement is based on age, technical level, readiness, and Artistic Director recommendation.

INDIVIDUAL MENTORSHIP

Every dancer develops differently. Our Pre-Professional Program combines structured Vaganova-based training with individualized guidance from MBS Artistic Directors.

Students receive ongoing feedback based on their technical development, artistic strengths, individual goals, and readiness for the next stage of training.

Guidance may include training priorities, pointe development, variation and repertoire selection, competition preparation, summer intensive recommendations, audition preparation, college dance programs, trainee opportunities, and professional career pathways.

Pre-Professional dancers and their families receive individual Progress & Goals Reviews during the season to discuss development, priorities, and next steps.

DAYTIME & COMPANY TRAINING

Senior Pre-Professional dancers may have opportunities to participate in daytime training alongside Minnesota Ballet Theatre company-level dancers, based on age, technical level, readiness, and schedule availability.

Daytime training provides additional exposure to a professional-style environment, allowing students to experience the pace, discipline, and expectations of advanced company-level classes while continuing their structured Pre-Professional training.

For dancers seeking more intensive training, daytime classes may be incorporated into an individualized weekly schedule.

ADMISSION & PLACEMENT

Enrollment in the Pre-Professional Program is by assessment and invitation. Placement is based on age, current technical level, training background, readiness, and individual goals.

Students currently training outside Minnesota Ballet School are welcome to request an assessment.

PERFORMANCE & COMPETITION OPPORTUNITIES

Pre-Professional dancers have opportunities to participate in Minnesota Ballet School and Minnesota Ballet Theatre productions throughout the season.

Selected dancers may also be invited to participate in ballet competitions, including classical and contemporary group works, solos, duets, and variations. Competition participation and repertoire are determined individually by the faculty based on each dancer’s age, level, readiness, and training goals.

Competition participation is by faculty recommendation and is not required for every Pre-Professional student.

TUITION & ENROLLMENT

Pre-Professional tuition is based on each dancer’s assigned training schedule and level.

Following the assessment, families will receive a placement recommendation, individualized training schedule, tuition information, and enrollment instructions.
